NEW YORK — The FBI has filed a lawsuit against the city of New York over the alleged hacking of a cellphone tower in the Bronx, the FBI said in a filing Tuesday.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Manhattan.
It was not immediately clear if the FBI was referring to a previous case.
In the suit, the bureau alleges the New York Police Department violated a federal law in 2013 when it improperly hacked into a cellphone network in New York’s borough of Queens.
The NYPD has denied any wrongdoing.
The FBI said the NYPD and the federal agency that oversees it did not act improperly in that incident.
The NYPD said in its response to the lawsuit that it was investigating a potential security breach that occurred in 2014.
The city of Queens, which is home to the borough, said in an earlier statement that it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
