How to avoid social security unemployment in Australia

When you’re unemployed, you can’t claim disability benefits because it’s not recognised as a disability.

But when you qualify for social security payments, you’ll still need to prove that you have the disability.

This means you’ll need to fill out a form to prove your disability.

And you need to get a doctor’s certificate.

To qualify for disability, you need a diagnosis of a “serious physical or mental impairment”.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that one in four Australians aged between 18 and 64 is disabled.

And while many of those who are eligible for disability benefits live in the most marginalised parts of society, there’s also a sizeable number who live in Sydney and Melbourne.

The ABC’s Chris Lawrence reports from Canberra.
